General Motors lost its title as the worlds buggest selling car maker in the first quarter of 2008 to Toyota. Whilst the Japanese manufacturers sales were down 4.4% in the US, its sales in the rest of the world were up 2.8% to a total of 2.41million. This contrast with GM whose sales dropped 0.6 percent to 2.25 million.

COMMENT

The Japanese started exporting in big numbers to the West in the 1960’s and 70’s, now 40 years on one of their manufacturers is the biggest in the world. In the 1980’s the Koreans boasted that they would take over from the Japanese, to date it hasn’t happened and it probably never will. With the Chinese domestic market growing and high volume exports getting ever closer how long will it take before the Chinese overtake Japan. Presently China has many manifacturers but their industry is already undergoing rationalisation. Chery as the worlds largest manufacturer by 2025 anyone?
